Strange goings on at Westbury - with the season two thirds over, mid-table Westbury United Reserves have withdrawn from the Wiltshire Premier league. Two ex Trowbridge Town managers went there to develop and progress their careers but it`s all ended in tears, presumably losing to bottom team Pewsey was the last straw. Meanwhile Westbury United 1st team`s excellent run in the Western Premier appears to have shuddered to a halt with basement boys Shortwood United recording their first league win of the season after seven months of trying at Meadow Lane. Westbury United Development FC (3rds) completed an unwanted hat trick with a 5-1 drubbing by Calne Town Reserves.

The manager Kieran Baggs resigned and plastered his "case" for doing do so all over social media on Friday afternoon. Of a senior squad of 18 players, 11 followed suit on Friday evening and 4 more this morning. He was, at best, a marmite character (not a favourite of mine), but he got us out of the Western and seemed to be able to get players in. He had his own 'fan army' who wailed and gnashed their teeth on Twitter and Facebook, blaming the club for a lack of ambition and saying they were going to boycott games. Idiots. I know there is more than just the ex-manager's side of the story (there always is) and it will come out in good time. However when I turned up today, we had 3 senior pro's and had cobbled together 7 U-18/Reserve players and no subs to play a big, experienced Step 4 side. That we finished 0-3 was a testament to the effort the side put in. The home crowd were amazing and totally behind the team and the club. The score was irrelevant to an extent; we were never going to win. We have an immediate problem in that we cannot sign anyone because we are outside the transfer slot and I think we are going to approach the FA to see if we can register our U-18's, Reserves and A team players just to fulfil the season. A standing ovation for the mighty 10 at the end and fully deserved. Interesting times for the remaining season. Oh, and of the 'quitters' on-line, a few turned up...and looked a bit sheepish.
